Music Hall Amphitheater To Open This Weekend

Music Hall Amphitheater will open this Friday, kicking off a summer season of concerts, dance, theatre, improv, and special activities that was created as a pandemic workaround but is likely to become an annual summer fixture.

The new location, which will be located next to Music Hall on Madison Avenue, will hold up to 1,000 spectators in a series of socially separated pods that seat six people each.

The amphitheater venue, which is atop the theater's parking lot, began construction last week. Greektown Casino-Hotel is sponsoring a 1,900-square-foot covered stage.

The new venue will open with an invitation-only concert of Marvin Gaye music on Friday, featuring a live re-creation of “What's Going On,” which was released 50 years ago today. The concert, which features Detroit vocalists and a house band led by Kern Brantley, is a follow-up to one that debuted last fall outside Music Hall.
